Before you pack your bags and wax your boards, here are a few essentials about life and surf in San Lorenzo, Manta, Ecuador:
Surf & Ocean Conditions
• Water Temperature: Warm year-round — board shorts or a bikini will usually do the trick.
• Wetsuit Needs: Occasionally, early mornings with strong offshore winds or small upwellings may call for a light 2mm long-sleeve top. Otherwise, tropical comfort all day.
• Wax: Tropical surf wax is a must.
• Boards:
• Bring 2 setups – a small-wave groveler/hybrid for fun days and a step-up for the bigger, heavier swells.
• Don’t forget multiple leashes: comp leashes for small days, standard leashes for everyday surf, and even a big-wave leash for rare solid swells.
Sun & Health
• The Ecuadorian sun is intense. Stock up on sunscreen (lots of it). Zinc, especially white zinc, is highly recommended.
• Hydration is key – drink water constantly. Many visitors mistake dehydration for food poisoning. Stay on top of it or you’ll be meeting an IV drip instead of the waves.
Money & Language
• Currency: Ecuador uses the U.S. dollar.
• Language: Spanish is the main language. English is spoken in larger cities, but less so in smaller coastal towns. A few phrases in Spanish go a long way!

• If you’re not renting a car or booking a surf tour, transportation is simple:
• Local buses and taxis connect San Lorenzo to Manta (20–25 minutes).
• Management can help with groceries, errands, or local trips for a small fee.

Hi, I’m Keith Keller. I’m originally from the East Coast of U.S.A., but I’ve been living in Ecuador for 16 years (surfing here for over 20 years). From the Galápagos to most of the mainland, I know these waves inside and out. I’ve built my life around surf and hospitality—previously owning La Buena Vida Hotel & Surf Camp in Ayampe and El Nido Boutique Hotel in Puerto López. I also launched Ecuador’s first surf brand, Mineral Surfboards. Now, I’m the founder of Villa San Lorenzo Surf & Stay in Manta, Ecuador, where I help international travelers experience the best surf zones around San Lorenzo, Manta, and Puerto Cayo. Whether you’re looking for surf tours, local conditions, or a place to stay right on the break—I’ve got you covered. Reach out anytime, and let’s get you on the right waves in Ecuador.
