Surf Safety Notes – Pacifico, Siargao
Location: Pacifico
1. Know the Conditions
Pacifico is a powerful beach break; wave size can increase quickly with northeast swells (Oct–Mar).
Check swell height, period, wind, and tide before entering.
Beginners should avoid head-high and above conditions.
2. Tide Awareness
Mid to high tide is generally safer and more forgiving.
Low tide can produce faster, heavier waves and stronger pull.
3. Rip Currents
Strong rips are common, especially after big sets.
If caught, do not fight the current; paddle parallel to shore until free, then paddle in.
4. Equipment Safety
Use the correct board size for your level (longboards for beginners).
Always wear a leash to prevent runaway boards.
Inspect board and leash before surfing.
5. Lineup Etiquette
Observe the lineup before paddling out.
Do not drop in on another surfer’s wave.
Maintain safe distance to avoid collisions.
6. Physical Readiness
Surf only if you are fit and confident in open-water swimming.
Warm up before entering; exit the water if fatigued.
7. Weather & Environment
Avoid surfing during thunderstorms or strong onshore winds.
Protect from sun exposure: rashguard, hydration, reef-safe sunscreen.
8. Local Guidance
Follow instructions from local instructors or guides.
Respect local surfers and community rules.
9. Emergency Awareness
Identify entry/exit points before surfing.
In case of injury or exhaustion, signal for help immediately.
